Severs Disease

An inflammation of the growth plate at the heel typically occurs in adolescents. Most children will experience pain in the heel especially with activities. If the condition is not attended to the pain will even be present with less stressful activities. Fortunately, the condition is self limiting and will resolve once the bone has completed growing. However, the pain may limit activity to the point that medical intervention is needed before the bone can complete.

The heel pain is aggravated by physical activity (walking, jumping, running, etc) very common to all children. If left untreated and able to progress, the pain can significantly limit activity causing limping, inability to walk long distances and pain to the touch.

Treatment may consist of:

  • Stretching hamstring and calf muscles
  • Using RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Orthotics
  • Shoe modification
